I shared the story of Abraham with the kids and the importance of obedience and following God that you can see in Abraham’s entire life. Abraham is a wonderful model for us in obedience and following God. When God told Abraham, “This is the time for you to move,” Abraham did, leaving his land and his family and heading to a foreign land, without knowing where he was going. This was the challenge I gave the children to think about: “How did Abraham move to a place he didn’t know? And how did he have the faith and obedience to do so?” Good questions and challenges, and planting seeds of faith and obedience in children at this age is very important.

A life of obedience and following God is costly, but disobedience is much more costly. The journey of obedience is difficult, but it is worth it. When I felt a special call from God to leave my family and city in “Upper Egypt” in order to go to Cairo, I didn’t know the details. I went and found grace. God began to use me among Egyptians and Sudanese and opened a door for me to serve Sudanese refugees in Cairo, refugees who came with broken hearts because of the loss of family members. Our role is to visit them, listen to their stories, pray with them, encourage them, and share the Gospel with them. When I felt a calling from God to go to Uganda, I went and found grace despite the challenges of language, culture, and, for quite some time, finances. But when we follow the Lord, we have stories to share with our children, stories for future generations about following the Lord and the grace we found.
